Did Ed Harris Actually Punch James Cameron?
Given the stories about The Abyss' production that have been confirmed, it makes sense that people would believe just about any outrageous story about the film. However, it doesn't matter whether people find a story believable when the question is if it is true.
According to several articles and social media posts, Ed Harris once punched James Cameron in the face after the actor almost drowned and the director kept filming. Most of those articles seem to cite the fact that The Abyss' IMDb trivia page claims the punch happened.
In the aforementioned 2016 article that quoted Harris talking about The Abyss, it was reported that Ed truly did almost drown while making The Abyss. As a result, it seems like at least part of the punching story can be confirmed.
As for the punching part of the story, it seems likely that stems from a 1989 issue of Premiere magazine that featured an article about how difficult it was to make The Abyss. Since that issue isn't archived online, however, there is no way to definitively confirm that Harris punched Cameron.
