Kaley Cuoco's First Marriage Turned Into A Nightmare After Her Ex 'Completely Changed'

Highlights

  • Kaley Cuoco's marriage to Ryan Sweeting was a nightmare, as he showed his true colors after they tied the knot.
  • Cuoco knew Sweeting was "the one" early on in their relationship, but it ultimately ended in divorce after just two years.
  • Cuoco has sworn off marriage and is focused on having a long-lasting relationship or partnership instead, prioritizing her career and personal growth.

Although she began professionally acting in the early 90s, Kaley Cuoco didn’t get her breakthrough a decade later when she landed the role of Bridget Hennessy on the ABC sitcom 8 Simple Rules (2002–2005). Afterward, she went on to appear on many popular TV series, including Charmed and, of course, The Big Bang Theory, for which she won several awards.

While her TBBT character, Penny, got her happily ever after with Leonard (portrayed by Johhny Galecki), Cuoco hasn’t had the best of luck with relationships in the past. Back in 2013, the actress married professional tennis player Ryan Sweeting only for them to divorce after only two years.

In a recent interview, the Big Bang Theory star revealed that her marriage to Sweeting was a complete nightmare once the athlete showed his true colors.

Kaley Cuoco And Ryan Sweeting Got Engaged After Three Months Of Dating

In 2013, after a short romance with Henry Cavill, Kaley Cuoco met former tennis pro, Ryan Sweeting, through a mutual friend. "I had kind of an interesting situation over the summer, and I was kind of in a weird place, and a very close mutual friend of ours said, 'Oh my god, have you met this guy Ryan?'" the Meet Cute star recalled during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. "I was just not in a good place to meet anyone. I said, 'I'm not ready. I'm taking time away from love for a while.' I was very sad."

However, the friend managed to convince her to meet with the athlete during his next trip to Los Angeles. “'You know, he's coming to town. You've got one day to meet him, have a drink, and meet him,'" the actress recalled. So, they went out for dinner and the next day, Sweeting moved in with Cuoco. "We're still on our first date," she explained. "He never went home!"

The Big Bang Theory star knew that Sweeting was “the one” very early on in their relationship, "By day two I was like, ‘Oh my god.' It was so unbelievable. I said, 'This is it, this is it,'" she told Ellen. They got engaged in September 2013, only three months after their first date.

Ultimately, the couple tied the knot with a private ceremony in December of that same year. "I'm totally married," Cuoco announced her marriage to Sweeting during an appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman.

"I know you're all thinking, 'She's nuts!' I swear I'm not nuts! We were throwing a New Year's Eve party anyway, and I was like, 'Let's throw a ceremony in the party and not tell anybody.'"

Kaley Cuoco Revealed Ryan Sweeting 'Completely Changed' After They Got Married

Kaley Cuoco’s marriage with Ryan Sweeting ended as fast as it started. In 2015, the Big Bang Theory star filed for divorce, citing "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the split.

However, years later, Cuoco revealed the real reason why she divorced Sweeting.

“I married someone the first time who completely changed. The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met,” she told Cosmopolitan in 2018. “And that wasn’t my fault—that was his. I knew how much I had to give and how much I wanted to receive. I knew I just had to be patient…I had to go through a lot of things.”

Kaley Cuoco walked away with millions from her divorce, while Ryan Sweeting got minor expenses paid for.

“I honestly thought I wouldn’t get married again,” she added. “My ex ruined that word for me.” Luckily, Cuoco had her TBBT castmates Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg help her get over her divorce from Ryan Sweeting.

Shortly after their divorce was finalized, the actress went on to date equestrian Karl Cook, whom she married in 2018. Unfortunately, that relationship also didn’t last. Cuoco and Cook announced their separation in 2021 only to get divorced a year later.

Will Kaley Cuoco Ever Get Married Again?

After her long-drawn split from Karl Cook, Kaley Cuoco took a break from dating. However, she got back in the game in 2022, when she began dating actor Tom Pelphrey. This year the couple welcomed their daughter Matilda into the world.

Despite having a child together, Cuoco has admitted that she won’t be marrying Pelphrey. "I will never get married again. I would love to have a long-lasting relationship or a partnership. But I will never get married again. Absolutely not," Cuoco told Glamour for a 2022 cover story.

"I want to have a relationship that I give my time to and that the person feels [like they’re] really part of my life. I get so distracted with work, and I want to have that in the future," she added. "... I believe in love because I’ve had incredible relationships. I know that they’re out there. I like being someone’s partner and having that companionship."

The actress cited being too focused on her career to be able to navigate another marriage.

“I love love. I’m not someone that wants to be by myself. I just need to figure out my priorities a little bit and make sure now I know that I need to water that relationship. It’s like a plant,” she explained. “Sometimes I get too focused on the garden instead of the specific plant that needs to be watered. And I am well aware of that. I want to change, I want to be better.”
