Basinger pointed out that there were exceptions to this rule. Most notable is Leonardo DiCaprio who was able to shake his teen idol image after starring in Titanic by taking very specific roles that cast him in a different light than that of a romantic lead.

But in order to shake the teen idol persona means having the faith that roles with more depth can be landed, a problem that Pattinson struggled with after Twilight ended.

Before the final installment of Twilight was released to theaters, Pattinson was already looking for other projects to take on that would push him out of his comfort zone.

But in doing so, Pattinson believed that he was not a "good enough actor" to take on more complicated roles, having performed Edward Cullen for so many years and having Twilight make up a bulk of his resume.

"I abruptly realized I had no idea how you can do it in any respect," Pattinson explained about being cast as the lead in Cosmopolis. "I knew it was in reality good but I was scared of even calling. Actors are always trained to bulls**t, even though you hate one thing. And I had nothing to say, at all."

Pattinson went on to say, "Because David [Cronenberg] did the script he obviously knows what it’s about. As quickly as I said, 'I don’t know what it’s about,' he stated, 'Me neither.' Then I spent a week trying to figure out how you can get out of it, where I were given to the point the place I was going to have to call up and say, 'I’m too scared as a result of I don’t think I’m a good ample actor...' I didn’t wish to have that conversation."

Fortunately, Pattinson got out of his own way and did go on to take the role and star in Cosmopolis because this was the role that finally helped Pattinson get his confidence back as an actor.

Had Pattinson not signed on as the leading role of Cosmopolis, there is the distinct possibility that the film would have never been made had a smaller name been on the marquee. Not only did Pattinson help Cronenberg get his film to the big screen, but Cronenberg helped Pattinson get his love of acting back and in the process, his confidence as well.

"Well it was unquestionably a thrill so that you could help it get made… Especially one like this," Pattinson explained to IndieWire. "[Cronenberg’s] a type of directors the place he’s now not even on a level of 'Oh yeah I actually wish to paintings with him'."

Pattinson went on to mention, "It’s more or less changed my whole perception of who I will work with. There are individuals who I grew up gazing who're so part of the movie language that you just don’t even understand that they’re nonetheless making films."

All of this came from Cronenberg convincing Pattinson that he was "absolutely the right individual for the function" when Pattinson was doubting himself.
