As 'Sex and the City' spin-off 'And Just Like That...' has been renewed for a second season, it sort of feels beautiful final that Kim Cattrall won't be returning in this new bankruptcy both after sitting the first one out.
Airing on HBO Max, the ten-episode series follows the lives of 3 of the authentic 'SATC' main ladies: Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York Goldenblatt (Kristin Davis), now navigating profession and relationships of their 50s. As for Cattrall's Samantha, she lives in London now and is no longer friends with the gang.
Kim Cattrall Didn't Know The 'Sex And The City' Revival Would Happen
The 'How I Met Your Father' actress had made it transparent she didn't need to return in the position after six seasons of the cult, sex-positive HBO display and two, far much less appealing movies, released in 2008 and 2010 respectively.
In an interview with 'Variety,' Cattrall has looked back on the show and her character, for which she received a Golden Globe in 2002, and got candid about the revival.
First off, after refusing to go back for a 3rd movie, Cattrall didn't know about 'And Just Like That...' until it turned into public information in January 2011.
"I was never asked to be part of the reboot. I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media," the actress said.
The 'SATC' Revival Re-Used Some Storylines Of The Third Film
The 3rd film, in step with stories circulating in 2018, wasn't going to be all that groovy, in any case.
It would have stemmed from the similar premise of the revival — "The series is basically the third movie. That's how creative it was," Cattrall defined — hence take this as your spoiler caution if you have not watched 'And Just Like That...' but and intend to.
Similarly to the 2021 sequel collection, Carrie would have handled the demise of her husband Mr. Big (Chris Noth, edited out of the ultimate episode of 'And Just Like That...' following accusation of sexual misconduct). As for Samantha, she would have been nonetheless in the image... by hook or by crook dealing Miranda's son Brady sending her unsolicited intimate snaps.
Thank goodness the revival decided to present an excessively hormonal Brady a extra age-appropriate spouse, introducing his female friend Luisa (Cree Cicchino).
Considering the Brady storyline they would have given to Samantha, it's not unattainable to understand why Cattrall became the film down in 2016, kicking off an excessively public dialogue with Parker, Nixon and Davis, who all appeared considering returning as their 'SATC' characters.
"That’s an understatement," Cattrall said when the 'Variety' journalist recommended she said no as a result of she didn't really feel like Samantha would development in a third movie.
"It's a great wisdom to know when enough is enough," she additionally said.
"I also didn't want to compromise what the show was to me. The way forward seemed clear."
Cattrall Wanted To Focus On Samantha's Professional Conflict
So, what Cattrall would have wanted for Sam? The actress sought after to concentrate on her occupation, most likely with a storyline where she could be pressured to sell her PR company to a more youthful guy after the 2008 monetary crisis.
"[...] She had to sell it to some guy who's wearing a hoodie, and that's the dilemma she has. I mean that's a scenario that was kind of off the top of one of my reps' heads, and I thought that's a great idea. That's a conflict. Instead of an underage boy's..." she began, alluding to that Brady's ill-conceived storyline.
The Actress Didn't Cave To Fandom Pressure
Speaking of fandom or peer power to reprise the role, Cattrall feels she hasn't "deserted" anyone. She remains to be involved with author Darren Star, dress desginer Patricia Field and writer of the 'Sex and the City' guide that started all of it, Candace Bushnell (see beneath).
"Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago? And the job didn't get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters? Everything has to grow, or it dies.
"I felt that when the series ended, I thought that is sensible. We're now not repeating ourselves. And then the movie to end all the unfastened ends. And then there is some other film. And then there is another film?"
Cattrall Hasn't Watched 'And Just Like That...'
Like some fans of the original series, Cattrall did ask herself how the revival was going to work. "You said it. Not me," she told the journalist after they shared their own doubts on the sequel show.
The actress, however, hasn't watched any of it.
"I surely heard about it," she said, adding: "And I've come to the conclusion that in point of fact the biggest compliment I could have as an actor is to be neglected."
And like Cattrall, Samantha is certainly missed in the series, where Carrie ponders over their former friendship and the two eventually reconnect over text messages. As for the reason the show provided for the friend breakup (Samantha being upset when Carrie dropped her as her publicist), both the actress and the fans think it doesn't add up.
"[...] that feels other than the Samantha that I performed," she said.
"Yeah, it's so extraordinary. An international that I do know so much about that now I do not."
