What Was Dave Grohl And Chris Cornell's Friendship Like?

Dave Grohl and Chris Cornell's friendship is everlong.
The great thing about many of the bands that got here out of the grunge scene, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, and Soundgarden, is that they had been never truly competitive with every other.
So after they used to look every different on excursion circuits, all of them easily changed into friends. Now, sadly, the only gods of grunge left are Grohl and Eddie Vedder. We lost Kurt Cobain in the '90s, Layne Staley ten years later, and Chris Cornell in 2017.
Grohl continues to be an ambassador of rock, though, and like Cornell's daughter, he helps keep his friend's legacy alive, as he does for all the other fallen grunge frontmen.
They Collaborated In 2013
While there have been at all times collaborations occurring between some of the most famous grunge bands, like for example, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam combining forces to transform Temple of the Dog, Cornell, and Grohl never collaborated.
Until 2013, this is, when Grohl and the Foo Fighters essentially made Soundgarden make the video for their song, "By Crooked Steps," off of the band's 2012 album King Animal.
"We kind of made them make the video," Grohl told Fuse. He explained that he got here up with the "Sons of Anarchy"-themed video himself.
"It’s such an awesome Soundgarden song," Grohl stated. "I didn’t know if it was going to be a single or if they wanted to make a video."
Grohl took it upon himself to get began on a script of sorts for a video and despatched it to Soundgarden's drummer, Matt Cameron, who liked it.
"For Soundgarden to do something like that — they’re not known for their ‘wicked’ sense of humor," Grohl persisted. "Although, they are really fucking funny people. You would never know. They’re super dry and hilarious. The idea of them on the segways. I thought, ‘You know, it could work.'"
It did work, and the pair set to work in combination, which is what we like to look with our heroes.
They Were Going To Work Together Again Before Cornell Died
After Cornell died in 2017, Grohl was one of the vital first people to respond to his fellow rocker's death.
He printed in an interview with Rolling Stone, that he was just about to invite Soundgarden to play at their festival, CAL JAM 17, right sooner than Cornell died. The pageant saw performances by Queens of the Stone Age, Liam Gallagher, Wolf Alice, The Kills, Royal Blood, and Soundgarden would had been on the height of the invoice.
"We wanted to have Soundgarden. They had agreed to do it. And, um… it didn’t happen," Grohl said. Grohl went on to mention he beloved Cornell.
"He was a really sweet guy. Full of life. And he had so much to offer. That one hurt. Over the years you sort of count your blessings that you survived, and when you see another one go down…
I felt for his family. And I felt for his band, you know? Because that’s a long road, man… Every time it happens, the same feeling comes up. It’s shocking and confusing and I just don’t get it. You get into this with a love of music, and sharing it with people, and you hope everybody feels the same way. I know it’s more complicated than that… but, f**k. It just sucks."
But, yeah. I've at all times felt like the most important factor is solely to get house protected. You just gotta keep on keeping on."
In another interview with the radio show Morning Rumble, Grohl called Cornell "an exquisite guy."

"He was the sweetest person. He was so gifted, he had such a lot to supply that it was an actual shock to listen to that he had gone. I think that psychological well being and melancholy is one thing people must truly take critically. There’s a stigma attached to it that’s unfortunate."
During the Foo Fighters set at that year's Lollapalooza, Grohl was photographed kneeling before a picture of Cornell that was taped to their drummer, Taylor Hawkins' drum set.
Foo Fighters went on to pay tribute to Cornell many times while playing various gigs. In 2019, Grohl played "Everlong" at Cornell's tribute concert, I Am The Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell.
Grohl has always been a Soundgarden fan. He was able to hear "Black Hole Sun," before it was released and thought it was amazing. He thought it truly had the best combination of The Beatles and Black Sabbath and knew it was going to be huge.
It's great that Grohl and Cornell had a bond as musicians and a bond as collaborators, but we still wish Cornell was here to give us more. That might be selfish but who wants to see their favorite musicians die? No one sings like Cornell anymore, but Grohl can try and he does a great job keeping his friend's legacy alive. Otherwise, we'd fall on black days.
